MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH AND NUTRITION CORE MODEL- CARE GROUP APPROACH

RICOT utilises its existing care group model to conduct job mentorship support, capacity building, and trainings on community-based Inclusive Nutrition and Health practices related to Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices and the Baby Friendly Health Facility Initiative using a Training of Trainers model for care groups at the household cluster level as well as for community health promoters who help organize pregnant women into community-based care groups overseen by a Village Health Team (VHT).

MODEL JUSTIFICATION

In Oyam District where RICOT conducts its maternal child health activities, a recent report indicated that only 21% of pregnant women receive antenatal care within the first three months of pregnancy with most women seeking care closer to their due date (RICOT Baseline Data Report). This is mainly a result of the relative distance to the nearest health facility, existing cultural beliefs towards maternal health, little to no supportive health activities and services being implemented in the community, accompanied by weak social structures and lack of entities to sensitise the community about their health rights

“From the very beginning of our time working together, Daniel and RICOT embraced me as one of their staff. I felt included in all their work and enjoyed getting a glimpse into their day-to-day work through their Whatsapp group chat. Daniel is a wonderful role model and leader who has created a strong culture of caring and mutual respect within RICOT which is humbling to witness and is very motivating. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with and to have created longstanding relationships with an organization that is so passionate about the work they are doing at the community level.  I look forward to seeing RICOT continue to grow and contribute to creating a thriving, healthy community in Oyam District.” - Lynda Krisowaty
